On April 9, if you happen to be in Vermont, don’t miss a lecture by Haitian writer Jessica (M.J.) Fievre. “Writing Haiti: Myth, Culture, and Creativity” will be held at 7 p.m. in the St. Edmund’s Hall Farrell Room (#315) at Saint Michael College. Born in Port-au-Prince, Fievre is the author of several mystery novels and children’s books in French. She edited an anthology released by Women Writers of Haitian Descent. and a Sliver of Stone magazine nonfiction anthology. Her short stories, poems and children’s book in English have been widely published as well. Sponsored by the Campus Events Committee, Department of Modern Languages & Literature, the Center for Multicultural Affairs, the Center for Women and Gender and the English Department.

M.J. was invited by Laurence Clerfeuille, assistant professor of modern languages at Saint Michael College. At the April 2013 conference of Société des Professeurs Français et Francophones d’Amérique, in New York City, Laurence Clerfeuille delivered a paper, “Création d’une mémoire féminine chez Evelyne Trouillot, Jessica Fièvre et Barbara Bastien.”

In addition to the reading on Wednesday night, M.J. will visit two French 102 classes to discuss Haitian literature. She will be interviewed for an academic journal by Ms. Clerfeuille and will discuss the last part of Sortilège haïtien along with “L’homme au pardessus jaune” with French 435 students (“Women Writers in the Francophone World”).
